Our interview with Christophe Godelier – a talented artist who works in multiple mediums
Where are you from?
I was born in 1974 in Saïgon, south Vietnam. At 4 Months I was adopted by a french family, that is why my nationality is french. I am living today principally in Berlin(Germany) and sometimes in France.
How did you get involved in art?
When I was a child I was mostly interested in drawing, in music (Jazz music especially), in poetry. I was a dreamer, and even now. I was impressed by the beauty of many things, many faces, and wanted to transcribe this beauty, trying to express it. It could be a move, a face, a voice.
At 20 I studied in the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris, and graduated in 1999. Then I studied architecture too between 2003 and 2008 but for a long time I focus mostly on painting and sculpture. The artist who ever had a strong impact in my life are Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Aristide Maillol, Rembrandt Bugatti, Edward Hopper, and many others of course. Especially many painters living currently in USA. So many of them get my deeply admiration.
What other interests do you have?
Music. I love Jazz, I love Michael Jackson, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller. And big composers as Michel Legrand, Vladimir Cosma, Duke Ellington. I am fascinated in György Ligeti or Olivier Messiaen too.
Do you sell your art?
Yes I mainly sell my productions from Berlin/Germany (Oil paintings, watercolors, portraits, sculptures), for clients based in USA.
What is your favorite topic?
Interesting question, because while I try to answer, somewhere I have to ask to myself too why do I paint. I hesitate to say : « life » or « light ». My favorite topic is probably the light.
