After Graduating from The Paris Opera Ballet School, Alexandre Proia joined the Boston Ballet and toured extensively with Rudolf Nureyev. He participated in the first New York International Ballet Competition in 1984 and subsequently received a contract with the New York City Ballet. He was quickly promoted to Soloist and performed Principal roles including Georges Balanchine’s Stravinsky’s violin Concerto (Second Area) The Four Temperaments (Phlegmatic) Serenade. Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, Glass Pieces, and In Memory Of… In Peter Martins’ Ecstatic Orange, Poulenc Sonata and Fearful Symmetries. Proia was featured in the Drama Desk and Tony nominated Broadway musical; Graciela Daniele’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold in1995 and in 1996 he joined the Martha Graham Company as a guest principal. In 1998 he worked with choreographer Martha Clarke and originated roles in Vers La Flamme and Hans Christian Anderson. Proia’s repertoire includes works by William Forsythe, Robert Wilson, Donald Byrd and Violette Verdy. He has choreographed and taught for many companies and schools including The New York City Ballet, Paris Opera, Teatro Colon, School Of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Complexions, The Alvin Ailey School, Joffrey School, Juilliard and Steps on Broadway. Proia is also an adjudicator for international competitions and festivals as well as regularly teaching students from all levels. In 2012 He became artistic director of the Georgia Ballet ( both company and school) and in 2014 he created Proia Dance Project, which serves as an atelier for multi media dance based works. He is currently working on various projects including a work commissioned by Thomas Hormel, teaching master classes for the College of Charleston, and most recently working with Hinton Battle Dance Academy in Tokyo.
