Our interview with Harry King…
How did you become a hairdresser? I was in my grandparents clothing store with an aunt of mine, She asked me what I wanted to do with my life, I told her I didn’t know, she said “Why don’t you become a hairdresser, you’ll make a lot of tips.” It was 1958 and a very fashionable cool thing to do if you weren’t staying on at school. So the next day I didn’t go to school, I went out and looked for a job. I didn’t get one but another auntie later in the week came over to the flat where I was living with my grandmother with a magazine, Hairdressers Journal, there were classified’s in the back. I answered one from Eric of Baker St. They were looking for apprentices, I called got an interview and got the job, I was fifteen years young.
Where did you grow up? I’m from London
What are some of your other interests? I love tennis and was a good player when I was younger. I love to cook, interested in the theater, movies, writing a screenplay, ballet, travel, been half way round the world, mostly from when I was working for the big time magazines and high end catalogues, documentaries, news, conversation.
What you doing now professionally? I no longer have a salon and am semi retired.
